Does consuming Curcumin relieve INFLAMMATION and joint pain?

Does consuming Curcumin relieve INFLAMMATION and joint pain?

What is Curcumin?

Curcumin is an active component of Turmeric. Turmeric contains a yellow-color substance called Curcumin, which can be used in cosmetics, pigmentation, foods, and mainly for some clinical treatment purposes.

Turmeric is the plant in the Ginger family. The stems and roots are ground into a powder used in much Asian cooking and the main ingredient in curry.

What is Curcumin?

What is INFLAMMATION?

Inflammation is the body’s protective response against infections or injuries. Inflammation mobilized defensive cells to the side of injury, limits the spread of pathogens, eliminates them, and initiates tissue repair.

INFLAMMATION

If your body is a fortress inflammation like a soldier. If you get injured or infected with the disease or toxin or even if you’re stressed out mentally, inflammation shows up to the crime scene and takes care of the problem. Inflammation can sometimes be a pain literally but without it, your body would have no way to wave a red flag and tell you that something is wrong.

There are two types of inflammation, Acute, and Chronic.

Acute inflammation

Acute inflammation is the response to sudden body damage, such as cutting your finger. To heal the cut, your body sends inflammatory cells to the injury. These cells start the healing process.

Basically, inflammation shows up and sounds the alarm and your white blood cells rush in like an army.

Chronic inflammation

Chronic inflammation is slightly different, it pops up in different parts of your body persistently. Like an annoying whack-a-mole game. Over time chronic inflammation is like a long long process. It can damage healthy cells and even trigger more serious conditions like tissue death and internal scarring.

Oxidative stress

There’s also something called oxidative stress. That’s important to unpack when it comes to chronic inflammation. Your body has highly reactive oxygen molecules that are kind of like hyped-up mercenaries. They’re ready to fight pathogens whenever deployed.

You also have antioxidants that function as nurses on the battlefield. They come in to stabilize those reactive oxygen molecules and restore balance. Oxidative stress is what happens that balance is disrupted.

Oxidative stress

Basically during an injury or infection, your body activates its immune response and called macrophages to come to the front line. Macrophase cells generate that highly reactive oxygen molecules that are excited to fight the enemy. But too many charged-up mercenaries and too few healers to calm them down can cause chaos on the battlefield in your body. And as usual, when there’s a problem like this inflammation shows up.

Does consuming Curcumin relieve INFLAMMATION

There are various animal studies that make known the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin.

There have been many clinical studies displaying that curcumin gives variant health benefits, the major one is its anti-inflammatory properties.

An analysis of ten observable trials supports the benefits of turmeric about 2000 mg/day in the treatment of INFLAMMATION. The patients relate improvement in morning walking abilities and joint pain after 3 months of treatment. It seems that the effects were similar to using non-prescription, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs.

Does it really work?

Curcumin the component of turmeric is generally used in the medical system and is specifically for inflammation. Turmeric contains a very heroic component called curcumin. Which helps to fight Acute inflammation and Chronic inflammation in your body.

This has been scientifically shown to be one of the most powerful anti-inflammatories found in nature and can be effective as ibuprofen for treating joint pain, muscle pain, and arthritis.

Is only Curcumin sufficient for anti-inflammatories?

If you decide to consume turmeric supplements, it is important to check if they also contain the piperine bio-active component of black pepper which helps with the absorption of curcumin. But If piperine is not in the right percentage with curcumin, it will not work properly.

So, don’t use any type ofnutraceutical productsthat don’t contain the right percentages of curcumin and piperine.

Are there any side effects of high doses of turmeric?

Remember that high doses use of turmeric may reason gastrointestinal problems, similar to the NSAIDs. So, high doses of turmeric every day are not recommended for your body.

Bottom Line

Recent studies have shown that up to 60% of thenutraceutical products on the market aren’t absorbed the way they are formulated. It’s also important to check the other ingredients in those supplements.

Studies suggest that combining the spice with piperine, found in black pepper, can increase the amount of curcumin that is absorbed by the body by up to 2,000%.

So, before using any type ofnutraceutical product ensure that they containthe right percentages of curcumin and piperine.

In Japan around the 1980s, the concept of functional food began. Health authorities realized the importance of improving the quality of life which is synonymous with increasing life expectancy. That is when the idea of food was introduced that promote good health and well-being while decreasing the risk of diseases. People gradually found out that functional foods provide the opportunity to ensure good health with a potentially positive effect on health.

Foods that can help regulate bodily function and eventually help in reducing risk of  diseases are characterized as functional food. The Japanese peoples’ will to live a healthy lifestyle and good food habits lead to the progress of functional foods. Ultimately, this development exceeded all expectations and resulted in increased consumer demand for functional foods that contain bio-active components.

Functional foods contain bio-active components and are known to offer diverse health benefits. It addresses numerous health-related issues by offering nutrients that positively impact overall health. Apart from that, functional food products also provide assistance in handling many health issues such as period pain, joint pain, acidity, and liver-related diseases. For example, ‘piperine’ found in black pepper is a bio-active component that has been linked to a long list of health benefits such as reduction of insulin-resistance, anti-inflammatory effects, and improvement of hepatic steatosis. But most importantly, piperine seems to be very beneficial for inflammatory diseases that are accompanied by severe pain like rheumatoid arthritis. Similarly, almost all bio-active components found in functional foods have unique benefits for the betterment of the health.

Scientific Basis for Functional Food

Functional Food

The identification and development of functional foods typically requires a foundational knowledge of food, nutritional, and the science behind it. This knowledge will help to reduce the mechanisms through which functional foods and bio-active components support the improvement of health and to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The mechanisms can be evaluated via research such as cell and animal studies and/or human studies. Afterward, the studies are used to assist new hypothesis for human nutrition studies. Human nutrition studies give the required data to determine if more research is required to improve the function of food component.

The History of the term “Functional Foods”

The idea of functional foods first emerged in the early 1980s in Japan, when a Japanese scholarly society proposed the idea. During this time, the law for functional foods was first introduced as Foods for Specified Health Use (FOSHU). This concept of functional food has been around for a while now. Over two thousand years ago, in the 5th century, Hippocrates said, ‘let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.’ Hippocrates, also known as the father of modern medicine, recognized the importance of the significance of good nourishment for good well-being. Similarly, the Japanese as well recognized the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle that comprises good fundamental dietary habits.

Now, including Japan, there has recently been a rapid increase in consumer interest for functional foods throughout the globe. Consumers require food that is healthy and protects them from different kinds of diseases. The awareness of the benefits of functional food is growing, and its demand is increasing in many countries. Several factors, such as increasing health concerns and growing health awareness about the value of functional food, are propelling the demand for functional food in Bangladesh and across the world.

Functional Food, Bio-active Food Components &  Potential Health Benefits

Functional Food

The positive effects of functional food include maintaining a state of well-being and reducing the risk of pathologic consequences. The most promising target of functional food science is gastrointestinal functions, re-dox and antioxidant systems, and metabolism of macro-nutrients. Ongoing research into functional foods will allow further explorations in the area of how much they enhance bodily functions and reduction of disease risks.

Functional food contains bio-active components that are primarily believed to give health benefits beyond their nutrient content.

Turmeric, for instance, contains a bio-active food component called ‘curcumin’. It has been shown that curcumin in turmeric has numerous health benefits like antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, enhanced brain function, and better control of obesity and diabetes.

Till now, many studies have shown that dietary food components can impart profound beneficial effects on human health, from the reduction of potential risk factors to the stoppage or delay of chronic diseases.

Bio-active food compounds, for example, are extra nutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities in foods. Bio-active components like polyphony, polyacrylamide, flavoring, peptides, and sapiens offer versatile health-promoting properties.

The primary responsibility of a diet is to provide enough nutrients to meet metabolic requirements while giving the consumer a feeling of satisfaction and well-being. Functional food is beneficial to the body in numerous ways. Hence, we must start incorporating them into our regular diets for a sustainable health goal.

June 09, 20221 Comment

Functional Food for Easing Your Period Cramps

Every woman menstruates and has to go through the pain of period cramps. Although the whole process is rather painful, regular intake of functional foods can relieve the discomfort to some extent.

Today in this article, we’ll talk about what functional food is and how it can help you with your menstrual cramps.

What is Functional food

The concept of functional food originated in the 1980’s in Japan, where the world’s healthiest people live. Later in 1994, the USA passed a bill called the “Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act ”, shortly DSHEA, which included a functional food section. The Functional Food Center In the USA stated that any food or ingredients with the necessary bioactive compounds are considered a functional food.

How Does Functional Food Help with Period cramps?

Functional foods can be fortified with additional ingredients like- vitamins, minerals, probiotics, or fiber. It helps by increasing the food’s health benefits. These foods reduce inflammation, enhance immune function, and improve heart health.

Functional food helps women with their pain during the menstruation cycle. During one’s period, the estrogen levels in a woman’s body change. Higher estrogen levels in the body cause more pain. Nutrients filled with ingredients like functional food can lower the estrogen level and eliminate fats from the body. That way, the hormones responsible for all the pain are in control, and it’s easier during your period.

Functional food for Asia Wings and  Bangladesh

It is rather unfortunate that the concept of functional food and its benefits is unknown in this country. However, many universities and companies like Organic Nutrition BD Ltd. are trying their best to put light on this concept and raise awareness among the citizens.

Functional food has the power to lead people to live healthier lives. Especially in a country like Bangladesh, where contaminated food stands as a significant threat to our society and its health, functional food can play the role of a game-changer.

Functional food for PMS

PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome. PMS includes mood swings, acne, sugar cravings, irritability, exhaustion, bloating, low self-esteem, and anxiety. The list goes on and gets more and more exhaustive. Every woman experiences PMS, and the experiences are different from one another.

The constant physical and mental pain we have to go through during our menstruation week is energy draining. The hormonal changes cause various issues like anxiety, panic attacks, mood swings, and so on and so forth.

One of the best things you can do is find out the essential micronutrients that may have been compromised from years of hormone disruption. After that, find the proper foods that contain these micronutrients to help your body replenish.

Ingredients of Functional food and their positive effects

Bioactive food components like amino acids, peptides, and structured lipids are said to be actively present in functional foods. For example, turmeric contains ‘curcumin’ which is an effective bioactive food component. Studies show that this “curcumin” component in turmeric has many health benefits such as- antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, enhanced brain function, and better control over obesity and diabetes. Yogurt contains “prebiotics” which is a non-digestible component that affects the growth of bacteria in the colon.

Functional food can affect your health positively. One of the many bright sides is maintaining a well fed body which also reduces the risk of pathological consequences.

Gastrointestinal functions, redox and antioxidant systems, metabolism of macronutrients are the most promising factors of functional food science. The research on functional food is still ongoing and it will allow further information regarding how much they can enhance bodily functions and reduce risk of diseases.

Yogurt, margarine, omega-3, fatty acids, and enriched eggs are some of the best examples of functional food. These foods have great potential to improve one’s health and prevent risks of diseases if they’re made a part of a day to day balanced diet.

The above list of functional foods can be overwhelming. But you can always start somewhere. Try collecting some of these foods and consuming them regularly. If you already consume some of them, then try timing your intake of these foods.

Everyone wants to be the owner of a robust and healthy body for an extended period of time. Functional food can help you go a long way in order to fulfill that want. Menstrual cramps can be very exhausting, and sometimes, the mental effect the hormonal changes throws at us is just inevitable. Consumption of functional food can help a lot by keeping your hormonal changes at bay.

In this article, we tried to explain what functional food is and how it can help you during your menstrual cycle. We hope this article is informative enough for you and comes in handy. Happy reading!

Menstrual cramps in Bangladesh and how to tackle them

Every lady has to go through the immense pain of menstrual cramps. Sometimes, it makes you vulnerable, and the physical and mental effect it has on you is indescribable. However, with the proper intake of food and medicines, this pain can be cured. Although in Bangladesh, the very topic of female hygiene is considered taboo. This should change. In this article, we’ll talk about what causes your menstrual cramps, what you can do to tackle them, and many more!

Menstrual cramp

What Causes Period Cramps?

Period cramps can appear because of many reasons. It’s primarily because of the changes in your hormones. When the estrogen level gets higher in your body, you experience period cramps.

You must be familiar with the term PMS which stands for premenstrual syndromes. PMS is another form of pain during one’s period. PMS causes bloating, headache, mood swings, nausea, and many other symptoms.

Another problem women face is gonorrheal. It is a pain that you suffer from menstruation. Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual disorder from which more than half of the female population suffer.

There are two types of dysmenorrhea. 1) Primary and 2) Secondary. The primary one is basically your menstrual cramps. Secondary dysmenorrhea is often caused by health issues like cysts, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis.

Both kinds are very much painful. It can affect your day-to-day life to a great extent.

Amenorrhea is another menstrual health issue. Women who have missed their menstruation for at least three months in a row suffer from this situation. Girls who don’t get their period even at the age of 15 usually get gonorrhea too.

Now that we know of all the possible reasons, the question automatically arises if there’s a way for women to tackle these challenges. Are they able to get rid of them in any way?

Actually, there are many ways to do it. There are medicines that can have side effects, and there are functional foods that are a better and healthier option. Now,

What is Functional Food?

The concept of functional food originated in the 1980s in Japan, where the world’s healthiest people live. Later in 1994, the USA passed a bill called the “Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act ”, shortly DSHEA, which included a functional food section. The Functional Food Center In the USA stated that any food or ingredients with the necessary bio-active compounds are considered a functional food.

How Does Functional Food Help with Period cramps?

Functional foods can be fortified with additional ingredients like- vitamins, minerals, probiotics, or fiber. It helps by increasing the food’s health benefits. These foods reduce inflammation, enhance immune function, and improve heart health.

Functional food has bioactive components that help women with their pain during the menstruation cycle. Nutrients filled with ingredients in functional food can lower the estrogen level and eliminate fats from the body. That way, the hormones responsible for all the pain are in control, and it’s easier during your period.

What is a bioactive food component?

According to an encyclopedia, “The term “bioactive food component” refers to nonessential bio-molecules that are present in foods and exhibit the capacity to modulate one or more metabolic processes, which results in the promotion of better health.”

So as we can already assume, bio-active components help increase the nutritional value of food, and that makes it bio-active food. Effective bio-active compounds like Quentin Proliferate, Apigenin Luteolin, Hesperetin Naringenin, Catechisms, etc. are found in bio-active foods.

Bioactive Compounds

Examples of bioactive substances can be carotenoids, flavonoids, carnitine, choline, coenzyme Q, phytosterols, phytoestrogens, glucosinolates, polyphenols, and taurine. These elements can gravely affect the nutritional value of food, creating bioactive food. Let’s get to know some of the most vital bioactive compounds and where to find them.

Flavonoids. Flavonoids are incorporated in almost all plants and are found mainly in cereals, legumes, nuts, olive oil, tea, red wine, vegetables, and fruits.

Phytoestrogens are present in soy and even in flaxseed oil, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Apigenin is found in numerous fruits and vegetables, parsley, celery, celeriac, and chamomile tea.

Carotenoids are one of the most potent antioxidant combinations. They are found in most fruits and vegetables, particularly in apricots, carrots, mangoes, tomatoes, and pumpkins.

The glucosinolates are raw components of many scented plants such as mustard, cabbage, and horseradish.

Luteolin is present in broccoli, green pepper, parsley, oregano, carrots, and rosemary. Lutenist lessens the chances of cancer.

Functional Food in Bangladesh & Asia Wings****

Yes, functional food is available in Bangladesh. Through research, a group of nutritionists in our country have successfully proven that specific ailments can be cured through “functional food.”.

Menstrual cramp

This research report was titled “Safety and Efficacy of Curcumin-Based Formulated Food (Karkuma Super Food) on Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms: A Randomized Double-blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial,” and it was released at an event at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council. The event was organized by Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU).

This study was conducted by Dr. Khaleda Islam who’s a professor at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, the University of Dhaka, and Dr. AK M Obaidul Haque, a professor of Food Technology and Nutritional Science at MBSTU.

Researchers developed a functional food which is called “Karkuma Super Food.” It was given to women who suffered from physical issues during menstruation.

Nutritionists said that functional foods could be naturally or scientifically produced. Researchers are said to have developed “Karkuma super food ” from raw materials collected from reliable, organic sources that have been certified by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Based on the type of pain experienced by female participants of the study, menstrual cycles were divided into three categories. The study showed that 47% of women suffer from typical problems, 45% from moderate difficulties, and 8% suffer from a range of other issues, including severe cramps. Women were divided into three groups based on three types of issues. Physical, mental, and behavioral.

The study was run for five months, and during this time, clinical trials were conducted on 52 women. One group of women was given Karkuma super food  on a daily basis, whereas the other group continued ingesting everyday food.

Prof. Julish Barthgsh stated, “There is a clear difference between those who were given the Karkuma super food and the control placebo group. Individuals in the former group were less likely to get sick. People who suffer from severe menstrual cramps have also felt much better after this food. No side effects were found.”

So as we can see, the role of functional food is pretty huge in order to live a sustainable life. If the side effects of medicines can be avoided through eating functional food, then it is indeed a significant change for us.

Every woman suffers from the unexplainable pain of period cramps. And in Bangladesh, as this topic is considered taboo, women suffer more because they don’t even talk about it or know much about the things they can do for pain relief. But this should change as menstruation is a biological cycle that every lady has to experience and it’s not a topic of stigma or taboo that you have to avoid it.

So, in hopes that women and men in Bangladesh will be more open to this topic and open their minds to gaining more knowledge about it, we are ending this article for today. We hope that you find this article informative and helpful and may you live a healthier life.

British Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
